Not seen from the outside, a hidden escape. Isolated from the unwanted view and opinions of the outside world, only exposed to the elements of Mother Nature. Clear doors act as a portal between a noisy house and its blissful yard. Tiptoe through the door to find one side kind and filled with nature and the other a harsh reality with responsibilities and stress. An auburn fence separates me from the busyness and chaos of society. An old, large white-and-brown clock hung high upon the wall, with arms that cannot move, no longer tells time. Another worry that the world has granted unspoken permission to forget about in this tranquil scene. Another worry forgiven by nature. My backyard is a safe space, where thoughts are calm, but pensive, and judgment is limited to only that of nature’s.
A fence lines the border of the yard, stopping on two sides to join with the tall house. A white canopy that has been worn and chipped away is decorated with vibrant green vines and enchanting fuschia flowers. Under it lay a small body of water that remains enclosed until the touch of an outside being seeks to change it. The heat of the water brings comfort and healing, holding many memories of smiles and happiness. Across from the canopy is the place where a friendly golden creature resides for many hours of the day. The sun gently reaches his locks and a warm glow radiates from him. Two long chairs sit side by side sheltered by the outspread arms of the umbrella placed behind them. Pots are sprinkled along the yard, providing homes for a diverse collection of plants. The greenery compliments the pink, white, and red roses that graze the area. The red roses are strong, vibrant and mysterious. The gentle pink blush and shy snow-like white contrast with the powerful beauty the red roses hold. Two tables reserved for special occasions collect dust as nights come and go with little use. The tables spark reminiscence upon nights where loved ones came together. Conversation and connection over good food and drinks. Deep conversations, booming laughter, and fond memories accompany the two stone tables.
Sensations spark under my feet as I step barefoot on the wooden deck. I can feel the ridges, where the ground is smooth and where it dips. The smell of roses wafts through the air, a bittersweet taste reaches my tongue. Occasionally, the smell of my neighbors dinners reach my yard and it reminds me that so many other lives are out there. So many lives are changing, thoughts turning, and hearts hurting. Children's laughter comes from the yard over, reminders of innocence and bliss flood my brain. Memories of days at the park, spending time in my old yard, playing outside every night with my neighbor. Sounds of nature, birds chirping, bees buzzing, and the whir of swaying trees travel across the area.
On the days where the sun shines bright, beams kiss my cheeks and send warmth throughout my body. The heat is like a tender hug around my body, caressing my skin. Birds singing in the morning signifies yet another beautiful day on earth. Reminders of how alluring life can be surround me. Flowers bloom and varieties of colors diversify the otherwise bland area. Lizards scurry up, down, and around, who knows where they may be going. On a lucky day, butterflies and hummingbirds find appeal in the vines that drape down from the canopy. The most pleasant of visits from beautiful and dainty creatures. Green sprouts emerge from the soil, peeking out from the ground, almost as if they are smiling at me. Life is put into perspective as tall standing trees look down upon me, crunched into a small corner of a very large world.
On the cold, biting days, the wonders of this small but charming place are entrancing. The sharp, frosty ground beneath my feet sends shivers through my body with each step. Seeking protection from the piercing elements of winter, bundle up in soft blankets, letting the delicate material hug my body. Lying down on the auburn deck, facing upward towards the sky, thoughts flow regarding the night sky above. A beautiful picture, darkness that is lit up by millions of miniscule dots. Serenity finds me with each shining star above. The silence of the night allows me to be alone with my thoughts. Whispers from the crisp wind tell me that everything will be okay. Nature always knows what you need, so healing. Accompanied by a warm cup, thoughts of friendlier days, and the surroundings of my beautiful backyard, I have escaped. I am bliss.
