Gugelhupf is a traditional German dessert similar to a pound cake. Every holiday season, my great-grandmother has made a Gugelhupf for the family to enjoy. Even when she couldn’t make it to the festivities, my grandmother would bring it with her when she came to visit for the holidays. Now, as my great-grandmother has passed, we hope to keep the recipe and tradition alive!
Ingredients
1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
6 eggs separated
1 ½ cups sifted flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
6 tablespoons milk
Flavoring: 1 teaspoon vanilla or ½ teaspoon almond extract or 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
Directions
Cream butter until it reaches the consistency of mayonnaise.
Slowly add the sugar while continuing to cream.
Beat until light and fluffy.
Beat in egg yolks one at a time.
Mix and sift flour, salt, and baking powder.
Combine milk and flavoring.
Add flour mixture and milk alternately to butter mixture. Stir gently but thoroughly.
Beat egg whites stiff. Fold in thoroughly. (Avoid beating egg whites dry.)
Spoon mixture into a well-greased 12-cup Gugelhupf pan. (Turk’s-head mold)
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 70 minutes.
Cool for 10 minutes.
Loosen cake around rim and tube and flip cake onto cake rack.
Garnish with confectioners’ sugar and other desired toppings.
Enjoy!
